A considerable number of travelers along the Mosel River make a halt in Cochem, an aesthetically pleasing town. Those ascending the hill and stopping at Cochem Imperial Castle (Reichsburg Cochem) en route to the picturesque town do so by automobile, boat, or for the sole purpose of sampling its wine. People are drawn to the citadel by its breathtaking view from 300 feet above the river.

Attractions at Cochem Castle

Reichsburg Cochem, the most imposing structure in the vicinity, is perched atop a ridge along the Mosel. The castle retains a limited number of Romanesque and Gothic elements; nevertheless, it remains an aesthetically pleasing edifice housing a museum dedicated to life within the fort.

The following are a selection of the most noteworthy attractions:

Four-story Romanesque tower with 12-foot-thick walls: Located in the center of the hexagonal structure is the tower with eight sides.

It is said that women found culpable of witchcraft were hurled from the highest window of the “Witches Tower.”

Among the Neo-Gothic halls, the most imposing and expansive is the Rittersaal, also known as Knight’s Hall.

Entrenched within are concealed passageways adorned with ornate armor and opulent furnishings.

The St. Christopher mosaic is located on the castle’s northern flank.

The Sonnenterrasse offers serene vistas of the Mosel valley and is furnished with beverage-serving table seats.

Visitors are welcome to stroll the grounds without charge; however, in order to gain access to the castle, they must attend forty-minute German talks accompanied by translation documents in twelve languages. A Knight’s Meal consists of a supper, beverages, and additional activities.
